Belgium Policy Statement-General Assembly

Welkom! Willkommen! Bienvenue! Belgium is thoroughly excited to be a part of this General Assembly. Although Belgium does not have an official government, we still wish to echo our good intentions in aiding this assembly in resolving the issues plaguing our world today.

With regards to the issue of kidnapping for ransom on an international scale, Belgium recognizes that, for the most part, ransom kidnappings occur in impoverished nations. In attempts to resolve this issue, Belgium asks the members of the General Assembly to condemn all acts of hostage-taking while facilitating unanimous punishments to all convicted culprits under the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice. Belgium also would like to urge member nations that have not yet done so to become parties to the International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes against Internationally Protected Persons, including Diplomatic Agents.

On the topic of Immigrant Rights, while Belgium understands the importance of the issue, we at the same time acknowledge that the disposition towards these persons is within said nation’s sovereignty. However, Belgium does encourage the General Assembly to adopt the policies drafted by the European Union with regards to illegal and legal immigrants in order to insure the preservation of human rights.

Concerning the issue of human trafficking and foreign worker’s rights, Belgium would like to assert its grave concern with the harsh working conditions related to human trafficking. It is our intention, as President of the EU, to establish universal punishment for convicted traffickers under the ICJ. Additionally, we encourage general education on the issue, including protection against and prevention of human trafficking.

It is our great hope that we can come together as one United Nations and resolve the issues at hand.
