France Policy Statement GA

Honorable chairs and fellow delegates the French Republic feels that uncontrolled migration is one of the most pressing concerns facing both Europe and the developing world today. Unrestricted, undocumented global migration has only negative effects for all countries involved. The vast influx of migrants into the developed world serves only to fuel unemployment, dampen the economy, drive down wages, and fill Europe with groups with no cultural or historical connection to the region. At the same time, these migrants undermine their own countries of origin, as valuable human capital is drained from the very developing nations which so desperately need it. The problem of immigration is not just a problem facing nations which receive immigrants- it is a global issue, and one that this body must address.

Much immigration from developing nations can be traced to the poor working conditions domestically. Workers throughout the developing world and in the Middle East and Asia in particular, face constant abuse and exploitation. This exploitation and abuse is driven by unregulated global trade, and lack of regulation both in the developing world and among the more economically developed markets.

Finally, the delegation of France would like to state our unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and violence worldwide. One of the frontlines in this struggle is the fight against kidnapping worldwide. In addition to its negative impact on tourism, kidnapping for ransom is a key source of funding for terrorist and militant groups worldwide. The French Republic stands ready to lead the global effort against kidnapping, both for its own sake and as a key victory in the fight against global terrorism.
